 The
activity level in the Iles de la Madeleine's MRC is quite high,
reaching 67.2%, which is beyond the 57.8% rate recorded in the
Gaspé area, and even exceeds Quebec'average of 65.1%.
However, the unemployement
rate is also really high, reaching 22.4% in the 1991 enumeration,
and going beyond 32% for the 15-24 year old category of the population.
It is important to note that this rate significantly changes
depending on the season of the year, given that the economic
activities are seasonal in most cases. Such a high unemployment
rate is even more worrisome if we consider that the enumeration
was carried out during a period of time when employment is at
its highest, meaning in June.
